How Much do You Know about Coffee?

The coffee (coffee tree) is an evergreen plant. Approximately 70 countries have a climate and elevation suitable for coffee cultivation. After three to five years of careful nurturing, the coffee plants become finally fertile.

Cultivation and Harvest of Coffee

The fruit of the coffee plants is called coffee cherries (coffee fruits). Coffee cherries are harvested from the plants during the ripening season. Each cherry contains two seeds that become coffee beans during processing.

The most commercially valuable species are Arabica and Robusta. Robusta species produce rustic-tasting coffee fruits, are highly productive, and are resistant to pests and diseases.

The shoots of coffee plants are cared for in seedling grower places for a few months before being planted in the fields. Coffee producers prefer to propagate Arabica plants from seeds, which typically produce higher-quality coffee cherries. The seeds are harvested from healthy Arabica plants (mother plants) and then sown and cultivated.

How Much Coffee Cherries Make 1 kg of Coffee Beans?

Depending on the variety, coffee plants can grow up to several meters tall, but they are typically pruned to a height of about 1.5 meters to facilitate manual harvesting. Harvesters may pick the crop in one or more passes, or they may choose to harvest everything at once, from unripe to overripe fruits.

With proper care, a healthy Arabica plant can produce 1-5 kg of coffee cherries in a season. To obtain 1 kg of coffee beans, 5-6 kg of coffee cherries are required. Regardless of how the coffee cherries are harvested, they must undergo a multi-step wet or dry processing before being classified according to their quality.
